Highlights
Industry:
Telemedicine & other healthcare services
Project scope:
- Seamless take-up of a live web portal from previous contractor
- Online store and financial module development
The Client
The client, a US-based company operating for more than seven years in healthcare services, gives its customers access to a telemedicine platform where licensed medical professionals provide advisory sessions as well as prescribe legal cannabis, CBD and related derivatives to treat diagnosed needs, including pain relief. Having started out with another contractor, eventually the client approached XIM to take up the platform development and enhance it, primarily by developing a more robust financial management module and adding online medicine-sales capabilities.
The Project
The client’s intention was to redesign the telemedicine platform and expand its functionality. Early in the project timeline, XIM’s main objective was to ensure that the active project, which was already generating revenue for the client, would continue to run smoothly throughout the transition period. Once that had been achieved, XIM could focus on the platform’s development in accordance with a broad list of features set out by the client.

The Solution
A Top-Notch Team
XIM assembled a dedicated team to work on the project and ensure seamless operation. The team was very specific to the client’s needs and included, apart from developers and QA, several business and finance engineering specialists as well as finance managers who worked to troubleshoot financial overlays and create actionable bug reports. The team members had, on average, five-plus years’ experience.
The Transition
Given that the system was live as of its transfer from the previous contractor to XIM, special precautions were taken to ensure that any downtime during the transition would be minimal and would affect doctors and patients as little as possible.
The Development
The team relied on Agile methodology for efficiency throughout the development process, and the REST architecture was used to accommodate RESTful web services.
XIM extensively revised the overall platform design and functionality to optimize performance. This resulted in a significant increase in the speed of communication between doctors and patients, and the overall usability of the website was scaled up.
New features introduced by XIM’s team included a video-chat module for doctor-to-patient counseling; a module for interaction with the systems of suppliers and vendors; automated scheduling for appointments, prescriptions and refills; video conferencing for use by physicians and the client’s management section; and an interface designed to meet the needs of hundreds of clients. Importantly, horizontal scalability had to be ensured due to the increased use of prescription cannabis and CBD.
The development team devised a financial module for the client’s back-office use based on their existing income model. It also introduced a new online store where customers could buy prescribed products as opposed to the previous interaction-only scenario.
The Outcome
The platform’s performance improved significantly as the result of this major redesign. Customers and doctors now communicate with minimal latency and maximum comfort, their security enhanced with user protection and encryption protocols. The financial module has been successfully integrated into the client’s back-office operations, and the new online store works as intended.
Generally, the array of new modules now works in accordance with the specifications, and revenue generation meets projections. Client reports indicate satisfaction with the result of this five-year-plus cooperation with XIM.
